The Valles Caldera National Preserve has been one of my favorite places to visit since I can remember. I grew up in Los Alamos in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. The road up the mountains from us was a gravel and dirt road with no guardrails. A rancher owned most of the Caldera where he raised cattle. We were never allowed to go down into the bowl of the ancient volcano. Our view from the road was looking over the rolling grassland, akin to looking out over the ocean.
Today, it is a National Preserve with a visitors center where the cattle were rounded and transported from the looks of the remaining corrals. The Jemez River flows through this area, hidden from the rim road by the sea of grasses and brush. This view looking down over the Valles and showing the curve of the Caldera is vast. One of my favorite lookouts.
